High Court warns Centre on non-compliance with order

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday gave a final opportunity to the Centre to implement its order to separate crime investigation from law and order duty at the police station level in the Capital within two weeks failing which the Union Home Secretary shall personally appear before it.

The direction came from a Division Bench of Chief Justice B. C. Patel and Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul. Centre's counsel Meet Malhotra submitted that the issue would be sorted out within two weeks. In case the order was not implemented, Delhi Police chief would also remain personally present to assist the court on the next date, the Bench said.

Observing that the Centre appeared to have no political will to take a decision on the issue, the court expressed strong displeasure over inordinate delay in the implementation of its order. On May 18, it had asked Union Home Ministry and Delhi Police Chief to explain why action should not be taken against them for failing to implement its order.
