COIMBATORE: The Department of Social Defence of the Government of Tamil Nadu has accorded `Fit Institution' status to the Don Bosco Anbu Illam Social Service Society, for the protection of children in need. Director of Childline and Anbu Illam John Dharman told The Hindu that the new status would be for a period of one year. The status would enable the institution "temporarily receive a child in need of care, protection or treatment", subject to the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2000. Coordinator of Childline Asokan said that street children and young labourers had given suggestions on promoting a child-friendly outlook in society, at a district-level workshop held last month to mark the 10th year of Childline. "Representatives selected at the workshop will participate in a State-level workshop to be held in January next year. A group of `leaders' will be chosen at that time, to take part in the national workshop on child rights in May 2006, when the child representatives will present a paper to the policy makers," he said. About 120 child delegates, both boys and girls, had been able to meet police officials, doctors, advocates and political representatives, as well as Childline beneficiaries. A group of volunteers enacted a street play titled Sumai (Burden) on the activities of Childline and the 1098 emergency hotline.
Open House
At the `Open House' organised to mark the occasion, there were children from CMC Colony, Ondipudur, Gondinagar, Eechanari, Kallukuzhi, Ganapathy, Ukkadam, Podanur and Tirupur.
