THE HOLY symbol of the Muslims, the crescent and star, has taken a new avatar at the hands of Sirpi Pama, a carpenter near Tirunelveli. After carving the symbol in teakwood beautifully, he affixed a clock in the middle of the beautifully made piece. With the timings of the prayers Isha, Fajr, Zuhar, Asar and Magrib, he has fixed five toy clocks around the clock, which costs around Rs. 4,500. Mr. Pama, who has studied up to Standard VIII, has carved several figurines of famous scientists such as Thomas Alva Edison, Albert Einstein and telescopes with imported lenses in teakwood.
