Udayon Our film stars, be it Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan or Mohanlal, lose no opportunity to play father-son roles. This, it seems, is to create the impression that they are young and the role of an elderly man is merely an aberration. Mohanlal plays a patriarch who tries, by hook or crook, to keep all the property to himself. His role is similar to that played by Kottarakkara in the film `Aranazhikaneram,' based on Parappurathu's novel. A lot was expected from Bhadran, director of films such as `Poomukhappadiyil Ninneyum Kaathu,' `Aiyer the Great' and `Spadikam,' but his latest offering is no patch on them. `Udayon' lacks the elements of curiosity and excitement and lapses into boredom. The end is a damp squib. The director's lack of vision together with the listless script have clearly deprived Mohanlal of the chance to display his acting prowess. The Tamil film `Anniyan' could have taught a lesson on how make-up and special effects can turn a film into a huge success.
