Tiruchi
VENDORS GEARED up to make a few extra bucks, cashed in on the crowd that streamed into Tiruchi on Wednesday to celebrate `Adi perukku.' Among the visitors was a group that had turned up to just to satisfy its curiosity about the happenings. Conspicuous among the vendors were a group of Narikkurava women displaying intricately carved blocks of wood. The blocks had exquisite patterns, which when dipped in a type of specially formulated dye left behind mehandi-like impressions on the palms and arms of passers-by eager to be decorated with the pleasant designs. The imprints were myriad, including floral designs, portraits, and random patterns. Smaller pieces of wood with tiny carvings on them were meant to imprint beautiful patterns on fingers and arms. These `fast track' imprints, though not the original mehandi, have their own charm.
