Indians start well

NEW DELHI: Third seed S. Kidambi played out a sedate draw with Poland's Jacek Stopa in the first round of the Valoz Cup Grandmasters tournament, held as part of the Olomouc Chess Summer at Olomouc, Czech Republic, on Wednesday.

Kidambi, who made his maiden GM norm in the Canadian Open last month, is looking for another in this 12-player round-robin tournament.

In the concurrently played Proclient Cup GM tournament, D.V. Prasad started with a win over fellow-IM Jan Bernasek of Czech Republic. GM Tejas Bakre drew with top seeded Bulgarian GM Julian Radulski.

India's latest Woman International Master Kruttika Nadig defeated Czech Republic's Vojtech Rojicek in the opening round of the 12-player Agentura 64 Cup Master tournament.

More Indians will join the action when the Olomouc Open starts on Thursday. — Special Correspondent

Childrens tournament

The Hosur Chess Academy will conduct Childrens tournament at the KNI Arts Gallery, 27th cross, 7th Block, Jayanagar on Aug. 7. The tournament will be held for under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14 and under16 years categories along with Super six, elegant eight and top ten for seeded players. Entries will be accepted at the venue till 8.55 a.m.

Independence day meet

The Mysore Chess Club will conduct the `Independence Day' Open tournament for boys and girls (under 15) at the Basudeva Somani FGC, Mysore on August 6. Interested players may enrol their names at the venue at 5.30 p.m. Participants should bring their own chess sets.

Athletics trials

The Mysore District Amateur Athletic Association will conduct the trials to select the district athletic teams (boys and girls) on Saturday at the University Oval grounds at 10 a.m. Details can be head from Srikanth (Ph: 9448402048), or Ravikumar (Ph: 9448328373).
