Celebrating 100 years of Vande Mataram

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: The centenary celebrations of the Vande Mataram movement will be held in Tenali, Narsaraopet and Guntur from August 7 to 20, said the movement centenary celebrations city committee secretary, Pulicherla Sambasiva Rao.

He said on Thursday that this was to commemorate the 1905 movement, and the partition of Bengal by Curzon, which ignited the idea of nationalism among the Hindus and Muslims. The movement united all the Indians and terrified the British rulers. Nationalist Muslim leaders like Abdul Rasool, Liaqat Hussain and Abdul Haleem Gazni opposed the partition of Bengal tooth and nail. But today, politicians were dividing people on the basis of caste and region for their selfish interests, he said.

Spreading the spirit

The committee would highlight the sacrifices made by leaders of the freedom movement, which resulted in India's freedom, said the committee president, Cherukuri Suryanarayana Murthy.

We would take the spirit of the movement to colleges, schools, government and private offices, he said. Small skits depicting scenes from the movement would be presented in every school. This would help to develop the ideals of nationalism among the children, he said. The committees formed in the three cities would conduct programmes simultaneously in their respective places and competitions in essay writing, elocution and Vandemataram-singing competitions would be conducted in 175 colleges and 20 colleges in Guntur city.

The valedictory function would be held on August 20, with a massive rally in the city and distribution of prizes to winners of the competitions, Mr. Murthy added.
