Two share lead

CHENNAI: : Tamil Nadu under-15 champion Saravana Krishnan of Modern Senior Secondary School, Chennai joined Balasubramaniam of ICF in the lead with seven points from eight games at the end of the eighth and penultimate round in the Adyar Times FIDE-rating chess tournament being played here on Thursday.

Saravana Krishnan scored an attacking 35-move victory over Sa Kannan by sacrificing a knight and hunting down the black king.

In total contrast, Balasubramaniam was held to a long and dull draw by Chennai schoolboy Karthikeyan after 56 moves from a minor piece ending.

Five players are tied for the third place with 6.5 points and it includes Syed Anwar Shazuli (ICF), Karthikeyan, Ven Prakash, Natarajan (ICF) and Dinesh Kumar.

In the upset of the day, Chennai schoolgirl Uthra scalped her second International Master in the event when she overcame Kudzanai Mamombe of Zimbabwe in a marathon 74-move encounter with the black pieces.

She had earlier defeated Mithrakanth in round two with the same colour.
