Two held for firing in MLAs' hostel

BJP MLAs demand CM's dismissal

DEHRA DUN: The police have arrested Pradeep Walia, an employee of the State-owned HILLTRON, and Rajender Singh Verma for allegedly firing several rounds in the MLAs' hostel here on Wednesday night. At least three of their accomplices, including a wanted criminal, are absconding, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

The group was staying in a flat allotted to an MLA. Keys of several such flats were recovered from them, he said.

Mr Walia was the OSD to a controversial Minister a few years ago. They escaped from the hostel after the incident but were arrested near Prince Chowk as the police sounded a red alert for intercepting two cars moving about as Government vehicles.

A group of senior Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs met the Governor, Sudershan Aggarwal and sought the Tiwari Government's dismissal as it had failed to ensure law and order in the State. "No one in the State is safe if anti- social elements are allowed to stay in the MLAs hostel. Two persons were arrested earlier this week as they tried to harass the families and now two more have been held for firing in the air to intimidate the Legislators and their families. This and the increasing crime graph calls for the dismissal of the Congress Government'', said former Ministers Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Harbans Kapoor and Ajay Bhatt.

In another incident, the police arrested Harshveer Mehta, general secretary of the Dehra Dun City Congress unit, on Thursday for running a satta racket. The Congress immediately suspended him from the party. The State Government is said to have recently recommended Mr Mehta's name for the post of the Cantonment Board vice- chairman to the Defence Ministry.
