MADURAI: Sportspersons toil on the field not only for a medal but also for a word of encouragement and an incentive from those at the helm of affairs. Having understood this factor, the Sports Authority of India came forward to award national- and state-level scholarships for 2005-`06 to sportspersons studying in schools, colleges or universities. Those who secured first, second or third position in individual events or won or bagged the runners-up position in team events in recognised international, national, All-India university or state-level championships, including state school competitions, conducted between January 1 and December 12, 2004, are eligible for the scholarships. Special scholarships are also available for unemployed women national champions above 19 years who secured first, second or third position in recognised senior nationals in individual events conducted during the same period. Eligible sportspersons can write to the Regional Director, Sports Authority of India, Nethaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala-147 001. For applications and details contact R. Gopinathan, District Sports Officer, Sports Authority of Tamil Nadu (Madurai unit), M.G.R. Stadium, Madurai-625 002. Phone:0452- 2537835.
