The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president's image in public is critical to the popularity of the Congress party. Party workers may be anxiously waiting for the impact the new KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala will make on the electorate. During his interaction with mediapersons in Kozhikode on Thursday, Mr. Chennithala radiated confidence and good humour. He fielded even barbed questions without losing his cool. As he spoke about his forthcoming `Chaitanya' yatra, a journalist asked: "The last such yatra by a Congress leader was counter-productive. The Congress was routed in the byelections that followed. Will your yatra too have the same disastrous effect?" Later, when Mr. Chennithala announced a plan to raise funds for party martyrs, another journalist asked, "Will it meet with the same fate as Chief Minister's tsunami relief fund (which has allegedly been spent in places not affected by the disaster)." The KPCC chief responded to both the questions with tact. His responses were in sharp contrast with the annoyance such queries used to evoke in some of his predecessors.
