VILLUPURAM: The CPI (M) will launch a weeklong campaign from August 15 to 22 in 500 villages in Villupuram district, highlighting the need for providing "land, jobs and food" to the deserving and the needy. This was decided at the district committee meeting held here recently, according to K.Anandan, district secretary, CPI (M). He said that the campaign would urge the authorities to restore the panjamar land from land-grabbers, and give away arid and cultivable forestland to poor farm labourers. Hundreds of acres of cultivable land at Vazhapoondi on the Kalvarayan Hills had been illegally usurped by certain persons, and these should be given back to the tribes who had earlier raised crops there. The transfer of land should be legalised through issuance of pattas, he observed. The party pointed out that the proposed legislation to allow only the sale of iodised salt would affect about 10,000 families who were solely dependent on saltpans for their livelihood. It appealed to the authorities to ensure that their rights to livelihood were fully protected. The CPI(M) also charged the police with acting in a partisan manner. While readily permitted the ruling AIADMK to stage protests on July 2 and 22, on the Chennai Tiruchi highway, dislocating traffic for hours together, they denied permission to opposition parties to voice their protests even in a peaceful and democratic manner, it alleged.
