KURNOOL: The district Collector Vikas Raj, formally launched the "Non-pesticide Management'' project, sponsored by Indira Kranti Patham (IKP), Krishi Vijnana Kendra and WASSAN (NGO) in Kurnool district. The project is aimed at reducing the cost of production for farmers by avoiding use of chemical pesticides. According to a survey, chemicals worth Rs. 4,000 crores were used in the country and Andhra Pradesh occupied the first place in the use of pesticides with 13 per cent share accounting for Rs. 500 crores. Kurnool district stood second with Rs. 50 crore consumption every year. The project is aimed at saving Rs. 15 lakhs in the first year, Rs. 75 lakhs in the second and Rs. 2.25 crores in the third year. Mr. Vikas Raj asked the officials and technicians associated with the project to be sensitive to the needs of farmers as loss of crop or sudden pest attack might compel them to use pesticides in the middle of the year defeating the very purpose of the project.
