Young musicians showcase talent The five-day event has been orgainsed to help young musicians showcase their talent

DHARWAD: A five-day music event by up and coming artistes of the Hindustani and Carnatic schools began here on Wednesday. The programme titled "Sanger Pastiche" has been organised by the Sangeet Natak Academy, the Department of Kannada and Culture, Sri Annajirao Sirur Auditorium Trust and Abhinaya Bharati, Dharwad. The event has been orgainsed to help young musicians showcase their talent.

The first-day's programme featured nadaswaram recital by S. Anandan of Chennai, Carnatic vocal recital by Swarna Rayaprolu of Hyderabad, sitar recital by Hafiz Khan of Dharwad and an instrumental ensemble presented by a Bangalore-based organisation, "Suswaralaya."

Starting with Hamsadhwani raga, Anandan, who is known as "Vadya Kalamani," held the audience spellbound for the next 45 minutes. Swarna Rayaprolu of Hyderabad, an artiste with All India Radio and Doordarshan, commenced her performance with an invocation to Mahaganapati.

She moved over to "Poornasajjuva" and "Janaranjini" to round off with Purandaradasa's kirtana in "Sindhu Bhairavi." She was accompanied by Pavan Singh on violin and Burra Sriram on mridangam.

Hafiz Khan, who was the next to be featured, comes from a family of musicians, and is the son of the famous sitar exponent Balekhan. He holds a postgraduate degree in music, and his performance reflected the class to which he belongs.

Suswaralaya's music ensemble turned out to be a feast of sorts with Rajkamal and Supradip on the flute, S. Aditya on the violin, J. Subha on the veena, C. Nitin and Amrit Nagasundaram on the mridangam, Phanindra Bhaskar on the ghatam and B.N. Phanindra on the tabla.

Earlier, well-known musicologist Sangameshwara Gurav, who inaugurated the festival, said he has for long dreamt of holding such a programme in his hometown, which has been fulfilled now.

Jayaprakash Bengeri, Deputy Secretary of the Documentation Wing of the academy, welcomed the gathering. Aravind Kulkarni of Abhinaya Bharati proposed a vote of thanks.
