HYDERABAD: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) Director, V.S. Prasad, has opined that the quality of faculty is more important than structures and it is one element that differentiates the best from the mediocre. Prof. Prasad, who was speaking on "Re-accreditation of Institutions of Higher Education" at St. Francis College for Women, said institutions that were planning to develop resources should invest in their faculty first since institutions are identified with their teachers more than anything else. He said the three parameters of quality were student satisfaction, parents' satisfaction and staff satisfaction while the elements that play a key role in a college getting a good grade were motivated students, committed and satisfied staff, infrastructure and governance. Absence of any of these would show the institutions in negative light. Drawing comparison with scientific institutions, he said unless the scientists were good the institutions do not hold any value. Stating that quality was a continuous activity, Prof. Prasad advised colleges going in for re-accreditation to become role models for other colleges. While bringing in changes the colleges should concentrate on the core values behind those changes.
