Protest against ban on old vehicles

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Scores of transport operators on Thursday took out a rally from Ramnagar crossroads to Sundarayya Park protesting against the ban imposed by the Government to phase out goods vehicles that were 15 years old. They demanded that the ban be lifted immediately.

Speaking to reporters, HUDA Area Transport Operators' Action Committee convenor M. Srinivas said the decision to impose the ban was one-sided. "Not all vehicles are causing pollution. Authorities should take into consideration the condition of the vehicle and not simply go by its age," he said.

Mr. Srinivas said they would submit a memorandum to the Transport Minister requesting him to lift the ban. He said that a lorry bandh would be organised in the next few days.

The agitators also raised slogans against the Road Transport Authorities alleging that they were harassing transport operators.
