Sagar gates to be opened today

HYDERABAD: Crest gates of Nagarjunasagar reservoir would be opened on Friday afternoon following release of water from Srisailam.

Major Irrigation Minister Ponnala Laxmaiah will be present when the gates would be opened.

The Nagarjunasagar Chief Engineer, Y. Abdul Basheer, said that only two gates would be opened to start with. If the inflows into the reservoir become intense the number of gates to be opened would be increased.

He said it was decided to open the gates at a water level of 565 ft. The level was expected to touch this height at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Mr. Basheer also said that the level was 552.5 ft. and the storage 301.43 tmcft.

The dam was receiving 5.7 lakh cusecs following heavy discharge into Krishna from Srisailam.

The Full Reservoir Level is 590 ft. and the optimum storage 408 tmcft.
