HAL to outsource work to industries

Bangalore: As a means to promote public-private partnership in the aviation sector, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has plans to outsource work estimated at Rs. 600 crores to Indian industries this year.

Addressing a two-day conference on "Public-Private Partnership with HAL," the Chairman of the company, Ashok Baweja, said HAL has taken administrative and policy measures to put the concept in place.

HAL is keen to tie up with competent partners in the private sector who can ensure strict delivery schedules, Mr. Baweja said.

Outsourcing would be largely in the area of volume production, besides design packages, he said. — Staff Reporter

Award for

V.R. Sudarshan

BANGALORE: The Delhi-based Institute of Directors (IOD) has selected the Chairman of the Legislative Council, V.R. Sudarshan, for its Distinguished Fellow award for 2005.

The award will be presented to him on Friday in Delhi, according to an institute press release.

The IOD is an association of directors now chaired by the former Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachalaiah. It focusses on management issues at the board level with special reference to corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. Its awardees are selected for their contribution to the corporate sector and national development. — Staff Reporter

B.M. Govindaraju is BESCOM Director

BANGALORE: The State Government has nominated B.M. Govindaraju, Chief Engineer, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. as one of the directors of the company. Mr. Govindaraju replaces V.M. Chandregowda, who was recently transferred. — Staff Reporter

`Spread concept of population education'

BANGALORE: Population education should be included in the school syllabus if population growth is to be contained, said B.L. Shankar, Chairman of the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat on Wednesday.

Speaking at the valedictory of the three-day Asia Pacific Summit - Population and Development, organised by Bangalore University, he said the concept of population education needs to be instilled in people from a young age. "People need to grow up valuing family planning," he said.

Mr. Shankar said illiteracy remained the biggest stumbling block to family planning.

R.M. Sahai, Registrar of Bangalore University, said the burgeoning population is putting immense pressure on land use and other natural resources. "It is even becoming difficult to maintain the mandatory 33 per cent forest cover," he said. — Staff Reporter

Seminar on Income Tax Act

MYSORE: The Tax Consultants' Association of India is organising a seminar on Income Tax Act (as amended by Finance Bill 2005) here on Saturday. A press release said that tax advocate K.K. Chaithanya will deliver a lecture on Income Tax Act while N. Janardhan Rao will release a directory of members on the occasion. Voter ID card

MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation has said that the process of issuing free photo identity cards for voters will commence on Saturday. Voters in the Krishnaraja, Chamaraja and Narasimharaja constituencies are eligible for photo identity cards. The process will end on September 24. — Staff Correspondent

Painting competition

MYSORE: Getit Infomediary Ltd. will organise an on-the-spot painting competition for schoolchildren on Saturday. Children aged between nine and 15 are eligible to participate in the competition to be held at the Karnataka Exhibition Authority Ground. Scholarships for women

Bidar: Women from backward classes undergoing training in typing and short hand will be given scholarships by the Government. Those who have passed SSLC are eligible. Applications are available at the office of the District Backward Classes and Minorities Development Officer and private typing training institutes. Last date for submission of applications is August 29.

Suspended

Bidar: A gram panchayat secretary was suspended for dereliction of duty while another was degraded on the same charges in Humnabad on Thursday. During a account inspection meeting, the chief executive officer of the zilla panchayat, Antony Mendonca, noticed the officers absence and initiated disciplinary orders. Sharnappa of Sindhanakera Gram Panchayat has been suspended pending inquiry. Namdeo of Ghodwadi Gram Panchayat has been transferred as the attender in the government school at Dubalgundi. — Staff Correspondent

Accident

DAVANGERE: Sixteen persons were injured in an accident in which a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus coming from Bangalore rammed into a parked truck near Koganur on Wednesday. The injured, who have been admitted to Chigateri general hospital, are reportedly out of danger. — Staff Correspondent

Workshop

SHIMOGA: The Principal District and Sessions Judge, V.B. Siriyannavar, has said that a special workshop on legal awareness will be held for teachers here on Saturday by the District Legal Services Authority, Canara Bank, Department of Public Instruction and the Shimoga Bar Association.

Talking to newspersons here on Thursday he said that nearly 400 teachers are expected to participate in the workshop.The topics to be discussed at the workshop are: "Children's rights and the Karnataka Children's Rights Bill 2005; Harassment and atrocity at workplace and protection; and Teachers and Karnataka Education Rules 1983 and relevant Articles of the Constitution." — Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA: Students of the Government Junior College here staged a demonstration on Thursday demanding that the district administration take steps to repair the leaking roofs of their classrooms. They took out a procession from their college to the Deputy Commissioner's office. Council plans dharna

MADIKERI: The Codava National Council will hold a day-long dharna in front of the Gandhi statue in Bangalore on August 18 to press for its demands. The protest will coincide with World Primitive Inhabitants Day. The "Kodava parliament" will meet on September 1 to decide on its activities for the next year. CPI(M) warns BJP

Bangalore: The State committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Janata Dal (Secular) leadership to uphold secular principles and be cautious about the game plan of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The secretary to the committee, G.N. Nagaraj, said the BJP is keen on exploiting the situation created by the differences in the Janata Dal (S).

Decision on English

BANGALORE: With most legislators cutting across party lines being inclined towards teaching conversational English from first standard, it is likely to be introduced during the present academic year itself. But a decision will be taken at the next Cabinet meeting, the Primary Education Minister, R. Ramalinga Reddy, said here on Thursday.

He told presspersons that there are many who thought it will be better to introduce English from third standard. — Staff Reporter

Dharna

SHIMOGA: Members of "AHIND" staged a dharna at the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday criticising the removal of Siddaramaiah from the post of the leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) Legislature Party.

They alleged that the President of the party and former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, has taken action against Mr. Siddaramaiah for participating in the AHIND convention. — Special Correspondent
