PRTU dharna for PRC scales

CUDDAPAH: Progressive Recognised Teachers Union (PRTU) members staged a dharna before the MDO office here on Thursday demanding 30 per cent fitment scales in the pay revision commission (PRC). The PRTU state secretary, Venkatasubba Reddy, demanded that the new pay scales be brought into effect from July. - Staff Reporter

AISF demand leader's arrest

CUDDAPAH: All-India Students' Federation (AISF) activists forced closure of some schools and staged a dharna at Puttaparthi circle in Proddatur town on Thursday, demanding that the Congress leader, E.V. Sudhakar Reddy, be arrested on charges of beating up four AISF activists during Chief Minister's visit to Proddatur on Wednesday. - Staff Reporter

Six injured

Nellore: Six persons were injured in four different accidents in Nellore district on Thursday.

Three persons sustained serious injuries when a lorry and tractor collided on the national highway, at Naidupet. Also at Naidupet, a boy was injured after a lorry hit him. At Chennur of Gudur mandal, one person riding a two-wheeler was seriously injured while attempting to avoid a manhole. On the Sangam — Mumbai road national highway at Tarunwai village, one person sustained injury when the auto in which he was travelling overturned. - Staff Reporter

Minister gheraoed

ANANTAPUR: Activists of All-India Students' Federation (AISF) gheraoed the Minister for Agriculture and Civil Supplies, N. Raghuveera Reddy, outside the DCC office here on Thursday demanding increase in the number of seats in degree colleges. They explained the woes of rural students on denial of seats. The Minister assured them that he will take up the matter with the officials concerned. - Staff Reporter

CPI activists

stage protest

KURNOOL: CPI supporters stormed the Mandal Development Office here on Thursday urging authorities to provide basic amenities at Geetha Mukherji Nagar on the outskirts of the city. The CPI city secretary K. Jagannatham said the residents of the township faced serious hardship in the absence of proper drinking water supply, sanitation, street lighting and toilets.

CPI leaders - Muneppa, Vavilala Krishnaiah and others took part in the protest. - Staff Reporter

Schoolboy dies

in hospital

Srikakulam: Lingala Raju, an 8th class student in Residential School in Duppalavalasa village in Etcherla mandal, died at Government Hospital here on Thursday after vomiting twice in the hostel. First, he was taken to a homeo doctor and after treatment he was referred to Government hospital. He died just 10 minutes after admission.

Enquiries revealed that two more students in the school - Muluga Suribabu and A. Rajasekhara - were suffering from diarrhoea.

RDO Saluri Venkateswara Rao who visited the residential school said doctors from PHCs at Ponnada and Etcherla were sent to the school to check all students. - Special Correspondent

Revival of legislative council

TIRUPATI: Former Assembly Speaker A. Eswara Reddy on Thursday affirmed that all that was needed to revive the legislative council in any State was a mere resolution by a `special majority', i.e., the majority of the total membership of the Assembly, not being less than two-thirds of the members actually present and voting.

He said that the Parliament thereupon could constitute the legislative council by passing a law to that effect and asserted that there was no need for a constitutional amendment as per Article 169(3). The Article, Mr. Reddy said, conferred on the States a constitutional right to constitute or abolish the Upper House. - Special Correspondent

Three killed in

road accident

ANANTAPUR: Three persons were killed and another was injured when the auto in which they were travelling collided head-on with a APSRTC bus coming in the opposite direction near B. Yaleru village of Atmakur mandal in the district on Thursday.

The victims were identified as H. Nallappa (55), V. Nallappa (55) and V. Kistappa (30).

Sex racket: cover-up bid alleged

HYDERABAD: The State unit of All-India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) has demanded action against Vasantha Kumari, Assistant Professor of Sri Venkateswara University, for her alleged involvement in a brothel case.

T. Jyoti, president, K. Swarupa Rani, secretary, in a representation to Home Minister K. Jana Reddy alleged that efforts were being made to protect the professor by leaders of both the ruling and opposition parties.

TIRUPATI: Meanwhile, Ms.Kumari was remanded to judicial custody for a period of 15 days by Venkatramana, III Munsif Magistrate, Tirupati, before whom she was produced by the Tirupati (West) police.

A case against her under Sections 3 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA) was registered. - Staff Reporter

Red sanders seized

Nellore: Red sanders worth Rs. 7 lakhs were seized by the police and forest officials at Rapur and Venkatagiri of Nellore district on Wednesday.

On a tip-off, the police detected red sander logs at Rapur mandal, valued at Rs. 2.50 lakhs, kept ready for illegal transport at Kalujugunta village. Two persons were taken into custody in this connection.

At Amuduru village of Dakkili mandal, forest officials seized red sanders worth Rs. 4.50 lakhs. - Staff Reporter
