Officials claim 550 deaths in agency

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: In a new twist to the row over tribal deaths from malaria and other diseases in the agency areas of Visakahapatnam, the Andhra Pradesh Revenue Services Association has put the figure at 550.

At a press conference, K. Laxmiah, president and other office-bearers of the association said they arrived at the figure based on the information received from the revenue officials posted in the agency areas and went to the extent of demanding action against the district Collector for "failing" to check the outbreak.

"There is virtually no medicare for Girijans in the agency areas."

They also demanded a thorough inquiry into alleged allotment of three acres of land in Visakhapantam to a woman and the attack on a Mandal Revenue Officer after he ordered removal of huts from the place.
