Water released into LBP canal

The reservoir has 26.15 tmc feet as against the full capacity of 32.8 tmc feet

ERODE: To farmers' surprise, water was released into the Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal on Thursday evening. Considering the commendable storage position of LBP reservoir, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has ordered the release of water.

Accordingly the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, inaugurated the release of water at 6 p.m.

The Collector said water would be allowed for 120 days and asked farmers to use the water prudently. He said the reservoir was having 26.15 tmc feet of water on Thursday as against the full capacity of 32.8 tmc feet. He said the level of the reservoir was 96.60 feet as against the full level of 105 feet.

He said during the corresponding period last year the level was only 60 feet with 15 tmc feet of water. He said sufficient stocks of paddy seeds were kept in all the agricultural depots.

He said only 500 cusecs of water was allowed into the canal on Thursday and it would be stepped up to 2,300 cusecs within a couple of days.

MLAs K. S. Thennarasu and P. Chidambaram, chairman of the Erode District Panchayat council, Selvi Murugesan, SIDCO chairman `Sindhu' Ravichandran and others attended the function.
