Engineering students'plea to Minister

THRUVANANTHAPURAM: The All Kerala Engineering Students' Association (Technos) has urged the Education Minister to ensure that the higher fee structure is not made applicable to the students in the self-financing engineering colleges under the Government. Even those students admitted under the merit quota in such colleges in the academic years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 were being made to pay Rs.36,000 instead of the fee of Rs.4,000 in force in Government engineering colleges, they said. - Staff Reporter

Trains cancelled

Thiruvananthapuram: The 6346 Thiruvananthapuram-Lokmanya Tilak Netravati Express of August 5 and 6 and the 6332 Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai CST Express of August 6 have been cancelled in view of the dislocation of rail services in Mumbai. A railway release said the 1082 Kanyakumari-Mumbai CST Express of August 5 and 6 and the 6340 Nagercoil-Mumbai CST Express of August 5 will run as per schedule. The departure of the 363 Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram Passenger from Kollam has been changed to 3.40 p.m. with effect from August 5, the release said. However, there is no change in the arrival time (5.30 p.m.) at Thiruvananthapuram Central. — Staff Reporter

Bank of India staff

to go on strike

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bank of India Staff Union will observe a day's strike in the Kerala branches of the bank on August 13 in protest against the bank's decision to close its branch at Mullakkal in Alappuzha, the union said in a statement on Thursday. The union said its members would also boycott the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the bank falling this year. — Special Correspondent

Court directive to convene meeting

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has directed the Cabinet Secretary and Chief Secretary to take steps to resolve the nine-year-old dispute between the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED) and Kerala State Cashew Workers Apex Industrial Cooperative Society (CAPEX) over supply of low quality raw cashew nuts to the latter. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Rajiv Gupta and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan also directed the Cabinet Secretary and the Chief Secretary to convene a meeting of officers of CAPEX and TRIFED and explore the possibility of resolving the dispute within three months. The Bench issued the directive while disposing of an appeal filed by TRIFED against an arbitration award. — Staff Reporter

NABARD aid for

public market

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs.1.12 crores from its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund to Kerala for a public market at Kollakadavu in Alappuzha district. The project envisages construction of a string of shops and a mini-slaughter house, with facilities for drinking water supply, lighting and sanitation, an official press release said on Thursday. The project is meant to help local farmers gain better prices for their commodities through the provision of an organised marketing facility. — Special Correspondent

Godown `gutted'

Thrissur: The Chavakkad police on Thursday said they had received a statement from A. Rajan of Chozhikathu House that a godown owned by him at Kadappuram, which kept fishing nets, coir and kerosene, had been destroyed in a fire last night. — Staff Reporter

Body found

Thrissur: The body of a 31-year-old woman, Laila, was found in the bedroom of her house at Puthoorkara here on Thursday. The police suspect that she had committed suicide. Daughter of P.N. Sreedharan Nair of Cheerathu House and wife of Anil, Laila had returned from the Gulf 10 days ago, where her husband is employed, the police said. She has a four-year-old child, Aswin.— Staff Reporter
