PROTEST: Members of `AHIND' burning the effigy of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in Hubli on Thursday.
HUBLI: Members of the Federation of Backward Classes, Dalits and Minorities (AHIND) took out a procession here on Thursday protesting against what they termed anti-backward classes attitude of the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. They burnt the effigy of Mr. Deve Gowda at the Kittur Chennamma Circle and shouted slogans against the former Prime Minister. The procession began from the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar opposite the Head Post Office here. Hundreds of people took part in the procession with portraits of the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah. While many people shouted slogans against Mr. Deve Gowda, some members sang songs against the former Prime Minister. Later, the protesters went in a procession to the tahsildar's office to submit a memorandum to the Governor and the Chief Minister. At the tahsildar's office, a public meeting was held. Several leaders of Ahind, including Pandurang Pammar, Nagaraj Gurikar, Ganesh Dodmani, Mazar Khan and others, who addressed the protesters, urged Mr. Deve Gowda to think twice before ousting Mr. Siddaramaiah as the leader of the Janata Dal (Secular) Legislature Party. Otherwise, he will have to pay a big price, they warned. Mr. Pandurang Pammar said the leaders will hold a meeting to decide the next course of action. He said the leaders might even decide to call for a bandh if the action against Mr. Siddaramaiah is not withdrawn. Owing to the protest, movement of vehicular traffic on Lamington Road and around Kittur Chennamma Circle was affected for more than half an hour.
