KOCHI: The Kerala Swathanthra Matsyathozhilali Federation has demanded the setting up of fishing harbours at Chellanam and Puthuvype as there are no fishing harbours between Kochi and Neendakara. In case fishermen faced rough seas, it will take now about four hours to reach a safe place. Similarly, if they landed a good catch they will have to sail for about four hours to sell it.
Studies completed
T. E. Johnson, President of the Federation, told a press conference here on Thursday that studies for setting up a fishing harbour at Chellanam had been completed and that a similar study should be carried out for Puthuvype. The Federation leaders, including Thomas Kocherry, veteran leader in the fisheries sector, offered their condolences to the families of Ottupurakkal Murugan and Munduparambil Babu, alias Raphael, who lost their lives in the seas on July 25. The leaders said tsunami relief work had not been carried out properly and that buildings violative of the Coastal Regulation Zone should be vacated. They said they would not allow unscientific aquaculture along the coast. Federation secretary P. V. Pavithran was also present at the press conference.
