KOLLAM: The State-level inauguration of the Akshaya project will be conducted by the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, at a function to be held here on Saturday. With the inauguration, the programme will be launched in seven districts. These are Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta in addition to Kollam. At a press conference here on Thursday, District Collector B. Sreenivas, informed that at the inaugural function to be held at the Municipal Town Hall, Minister for Local Administration Kutty Ahmed Kutty, will deliver the Akshaya message. Minister for Water Resources Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, will hand over the Akshaya Jyothi and Information Technology secretary P. H. Kurien, will present the report. From the seven districts, the Akshaya project has generated impressive response. More than 10,800 applications for starting Akshaya centres has already been received. Among them more than 3,600 are women. The aim of the project is to make at least one member from each family computer literate. The classes for the purpose will be conducted on the basis of a Malayalam programme. An Akshaya pilot project was implemented in Malappuram district and more than 5.8 lakh persons had become computer literate in that district through the programme.
For 3,000 families
The programme envisages opening a centre each for 3,000 families. There will be two centres in each panchayat area and seven centres in each municipal area. For the purpose of teaching each individual, the local bodies will contribute Rs. 80 to the person selected to run the centre. The beneficiary will have to contribute Rs. 40. The expenses to meet the opening of the Centre will have to be met by those being selected for the purpose. The Akshaya project does not target mere computer literacy. The centres would also function as communication and service points for e-mail, voice chat and Internet telephone. Electricity and telephone bill can be paid online through the centres. After basic computer literacy, a person can also pursue computer studies through the centres.
