Meet on Panchayati Raj institutions

KOCHI: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Mani Shankar Aiyer will inaugurate a two-day national conference on Panchayati Raj institutions at Hotel Le Meridien here on Friday.

The conference will discuss the modalities for the constitution of a National Council of Panchayati Raj Ministers. The idea to constitute such a council was evolved at a District Collectors' conference convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi recently.

The conference will draw up strategies to ensure the effective functioning of Panchayati Raj institutions, according to District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish.

The conference will have 70 delegates.
