Novel protest demanding seawall

Staff Reporter

`Human bund' from Munambam to South Chellanam on Monday

  • Agitation to highlight other issues as well
  • Public meeting at 23 centres on the occasion
  • Achuthanandan, other leaders to participate

KOCHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader S. Sarma has said that a `human bund' will be formed here next Monday to highlight the absence of protective walls along 150 km of the State's coast. People from different walks of life will form the bund from Munambam to South Chellanam at 4 p.m.

Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Sarma said the novel protest would also highlight people's fears about the move to import fish from Thailand, encroachment of backwaters, water pollution, move to grant licence to foreign trawlers to operate in Indian waters and the `unscientific' approach to deepening of the sea mouth here.

Public meetings will be held at 23 centres between the two centres. Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan; CPI(M) deputy leader in the Assembly Kodiyeri Balakrishnan; social critic Sukumar Azhikode; former MP E. Balanandan; K. Chandran Pillai, MP; and Kochi Mayor C.M. Dinesh Mani; are among those expected to participate in the human bund formation.

Mr. Sarma, a former Electricity Minister, demanded that the Ministers responsible for diverting the tsunami relief funds be brought before the law. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Finance Minister Vakkom Purushothaman and Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had varying explanations on the use of the funds. It is now clearly established that the funds have been diverted.

This is a violation of the assurance given by the Chief Minister at an all-party meeting held after the December 26 tsunami onslaught, he said.
