Aishwarya, Sudanwa claim top honours

CHENNAI: Aishwarya Srivastav of Maharashtra and Sudanwa Sitaram (Tamil Nadu) reigned supreme in the girls' and boys' under-14 sections respectively in the South Zone (first leg) phase of the Nike-AITA junior tennis tournament at SDAT-Nungambakkam Stadium here on Thursday.

In the girls' under-14 summit clash, Aishwarya, coached by Nandan Bal at Deccan Gymkhana courts, Pune, had the better of Kelsey Sundaram of Tamil Nadu 7-5, 6-4 in a battle that lasted for an hour and a half.

The Coimbatore lad Sudanwa raised his game when it mattered to defeat Venkat Iyer of Delhi 6-4, 6-2 in the boys' under-14 final. Trained by Manoj Kumar at Government College of Technology, Sudanwa showed fine anticipation and speed to outwit his Delhi rival.

The second leg will be held in New Delhi from August 29.

The results (finals):

Boys under-12: Mohit Mayur (TN) bt Surya Pawan (AP) 6-1, 6-4.

Under-14: Sudanwa Sitaram (TN) bt Venkat Iyer (Del) 6-4, 6-2.

Girls' under-12: Divija Mandava (AP) bt Y.P. Aishwarya (AP) 4-6, 6-2, 5-2 (conceded).

Under-14: Aishwarya Srivastav (Mah) bt Kelsey Sundaram (TN) 7-5, 6-4.
