UDUPI: Former Minister Vasanth V. Salian on Wednesday urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to release Rs. 11 crores to make up for the losses suffered owing to heavy rainfall in the district. Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Salian said that the damage caused by the rainfall in the district has been estimated at Rs. 11.45 crores. This includes Rs. 3 lakhs as compensation to the families of the three persons who died in rain-related incidents between June 1 and August 2, Rs. 5.27 lakhs for construction of concrete houses, Rs. 16.97 lakhs for 210 partially damaged houses, Rs. 1.59 lakhs for damage to mud houses, Rs. 2.17 lakhs for damage to cattle sheds, Rs. 7 crores for damaged roads coming under the zilla panchayat and the Public Works Department.
Agricultural land
As much as 1,390 acres of agricultural land has been damaged by rain. Many agricultural and horticultural crops have been destroyed. Mr. Salian urged the Deputy Commissioner to conduct a joint survey along with the departmental heads to assess the damage done to the crops.
