More colleges likely to get autonomy

Staff Correspondent

Better interaction between parents of students and institutions urged

MANGALORE: The Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, B. Hanumaiah, said here on Wednesday that efforts are on to ensure that eligible colleges under Mangalore University get autonomous status.

Inaugurating a programme on "Quality Initiatives in Accredited Institutions, Sustenance and Enhancement," at St. Aloysius College, Prof. Hanumaiah said that he has written to the Chancellor and Pro-Chancellor of the university on granting autonomy to eligible colleges.

Stating that interaction between an institution and parents of students will benefit the institution and the students, he said organising meetings with parents will help the institutions understand the areas in which they are lacking.

NAAC accreditation

The colleges should take care to maintain the quality of education otherwise they will loose out. Accreditation is a process that helps colleges identify their strengths and weaknesses, he said. Fifty colleges under Mangalore University have acquired NAAC accreditation and other colleges are in the process of getting the same.

Prof. Hanumaiah took severe exception to attempts made by some colleges to make artificial arrangements to impress the peer team when it visits the college.

Quality consciousness

B.S. Ponmudiraj, assistant adviser, NAAC, Bangalore, said that NAAC maintains that quality consciousness and improvement should be the aims of an institution.

He said that Karnataka stands second in the country in terms of highest number of colleges getting NAAC accreditation after Maharashtra.

In Maharashtra, 920 colleges have got NAAC accreditation, followed by Karnataka with 421 colleges.
