HYDERABAD: Senior Congress leader and MP, V. Hanumantha Rao, has expressed strong opposition to the creation of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) by merging 12 civic bodies surrounding the City. At a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Rao said not even a single legislator and corporator or the general public had supported GHMC. He questioned why no party meeting was organised by the Congress before taking the decision. "Everybody wants the proposal dropped and elections held for the 12 civic bodies along with others," he pointed out. Mr. Rao said he would lodge a complaint with the AICC general secretary and in charge of Andhra Pradesh affairs, Digvijay Singh. Party leaders were disappointed with the decision to create GHMC. The Rajya Sabha member also opposed the deletion of BCs from the voter list for the municipal elections. This move would prove costly for the Congress if it was not corrected immediately. He felt that a re-survey could be ordered to set right the "gross injustice" done to BCs. He expressed displeasure at the constitution of the APCC executive, stating that loyal workers had been ignored. "Leaders who lost the elections have made it to the PCC," he observed. Mr. Rao, who returned from the United States, said the response to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh's address to the Senate was overwhelming. He had urged Telugu NRIs to donate liberally to improve the health and education sectors in the State.
