Dindigul
Staff Reporter
DINDIGUL: : Regional Transport Offices in Theni and Dindigul districts will be fully computerised within two months. Computers and other necessary equipment had been installed in the main offices in Dindigul and Theni and unit offices in Palani, Batlagundu in Dindigul and in Uthamapalayam in Theni districts. To begin with, all transport offices functioning in own buildings in the State alone would be computerised. Automation would take place in the second phase in other offices. The Regional Transport Officer for Theni and Dindigul districts, C. Ramalingam, said that the main objective of computerisation was to speed up the processing work and provide quick service to people. After computerisation, all RTOs in the State would be inter-connected with Internet. Details of vehicles registered in Chennai could be viewed at the RTO office in Dindigul. All information including payment of tax, insurance permit details, engine and chassis of vehicle numbers could be viewed on entering registration number of the vehicle. Such a facility would help detect stolen vehicles immediately. Time delay in verification of documents at various would be reduced considerably. Postal expenses and time would be reduced drastically. About 95 per cent of the staff in RTOs in both the districts had undergone training to operate computers and maintain computerised records. With considerable reduction in work burden, the officials would concentrate more on enforcement work. Installation work had been completed in all offices. Internet connection has to be given. Registration numbers would be given on first-come-first-served basis. We could issue temporary licences, registration certificates, and fitness certification for public utility vehicles immediately. Mr. Ramalingam also appealed to the people to come to the RTO office directly to get licences and not to approach any middlemen or outsiders. Applicants may come to office with three passport photos along with residential and age proofs for getting licence. The office would do the rest. Already instructions were given to motor vehicle inspectors to give top priority to individuals approaching the office directly for licence, he said.
