Rushmi loses in doubles final

NEW DELHI: Rushmi Chakravarthi failed to win her 22nd career doubles title as she and Paula Marama of New Zealand lost 6-3, 7-5 in the final to Rebecca Llewellyn and Anna Smith of Britain in the $10,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in Wrexham, Britain, on Saturday.

The Indo-Kiwi pair had beaten the second-seeded Anna Hawkins and Karen Paterson of Britain 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals. In singles, top-seeded Rushmi had been shocked in the first round of singles.

In the $10,000 Futures tournament in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Gurmehar Singh lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the pre-quarterfinals to Hiroyasu Sato of Japan, after having beaten lucky-loser Yew-Ming Si of Malaysia 7-6 (4), 6-0 in the first round.

Three other Indians lost in the first round. Vijay Sundar Prashant lost 6-2, 6-2 to Agung Bagus Dewnatoro of Indonesia; eighth-seeded Pathanjali Ravishankar lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to qualifier Surya Wijaya of Indonesia and Tushar Liberhan went down 6-2, 6-1 to qualifier Nick Lindahl of Australia.

In doubles, Pathanjali Ravishankar and Sunu Wahyu Trijati of Indonesia lost in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-4 to third-seeded Hee-Seck Chung and Hee-Sung Chung of Korea. The duo had beaten Arief Darmawan and Muhammad Syahid of Indonesia 7-5, 6-3 in the first round. Tushar and Gurmehar had lost 6-4, 6-4 in the first round to the same Korean pair that ousted Pathanjali and partner.

Vijay Sundar Prashant and V.M. Ranjeet lost 6-1, 6-2 to Kai-Lung Chang and Wang-Cheng Hsieh of Chinese Taipei in another first round match. Ranjeet had failed to qualify in the singles event, as he lost in the second round 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Sebastian Dacosta of Indonesia.
