Kidambi loses to Potapov

NEW DELHI: Grandmaster-norm aspirant S. Kidambi ran into top seeded Russian Alexander Potapov in the third round and crashed to his first defeat in the Valoz Cup Grandmaster tournament held as part of the Olomouc Chess Summer at Olomouc, Czech Republic, on Friday.

Later, in the fourth round, Kidambi drew with Czech IM Pavel Simacek to reach two points.

In the Proclient Cup, Tejas Bakre drew both his games while D.V. Prasad enhanced his tally by 1.5 points.

Kruttika holds Jasny

Kruttika Nadig continued to gain valuable rating points after holding fourth seeded Czech Stanislav Jasny and Austrian Harald Groetz in the Agentura 64 Cup.

In the Olomouc Open, five Indians won their second round games while S. Satyapragyan drew.

Neelotpal stays unbeaten

Double Grandmaster-norm holder Neetotpal Das drew with Argentina's Benjamin Mela in the fifth round of the 31st Badalona International Open chess tournament in Baladona, Spain, on Friday.

The draw took Neelotpal's tally to 3.5points. During his unbeaten run so far, Neelotpal defeated Spain's Jesus Bena Canada, drew with Alvar Alonso Rosell, also of Spain, again drew with Chile's Mauricio Flores Rios and beat Spain's Sergi Obon Temprano.

Mexico's International Master Jose Gonzales Garcia leads with five points in this nine-round event.

Title in her sights

International Master S. Vijayalakshmi needs a draw to win the St. Jean International Open chess tournament in Geneva on Saturday.

In the eighth and penultimate round on Friday, the third-seeded Vijayalakshmi drew with Swiss IM Claude Landenbergue to reach seven points, one clear of the top two seeds — Russian Grandmasters Andrei Shchekachev and Alexander Cherniaev. In the final round, Vijayalakshmi faces German IM Richard Gerber.

Seventh seed S. Meenakshi drew with Switzerland's Jaspaul Bagri and took her tally to 4.5 points.
