RPF constable's house burgled

CUDDAPAH: Burglars broke into the house of a Railway Protection Force constable, Krishnaiah, near Nandalur railway station in the early hours of Saturday and decamped with nine tolas of gold and Rs. 20,000 cash. Krishnaiah, who returned home on Saturday morning after his duty, found the lock of the main door and the almirah open. A gold bracelet, six rings, two chains and two ear studs and Rs. 20,000 in cash were found stolen from his house. He lodged a complaint with the Nandalur police. - Staff Reporter

Scooterist knocked down by a tractor

CUDDAPAH: A scooterist, Palle Bali Reddy, (40), of Sanjeevareddinagar in Duvvur mandal was fatally run over by a tractor on Neelapuram road in the mandal on Saturday. The Duvvur SI Ananda Rao registered a case and shifted the body to Proddatur Government Hospital.- Staff Reporter

HCL's low-cost PC to hit the market soon

TIRUPATI: HCL Infosystems Limited, the personal computers major, has launched its low-cost version, HCL Ezeebee Pride, in its bid to reach every Indian household. The product, which is priced at Rs.9,990 ex-factory, is a fully functional personal computer, with software packages like Office Suite, Word, Excel and Internet browser, besides two USB ports. "Though the cost has been brought down, the quality has not been compromised," the company's Manager (Andhra Pradesh), Babu Krishnamurthy and Area Sales Manager (Rayalaseema), Ajit Panicker, told reporters here on Friday.- Staff Reporter

Chinese food mela at Hotel Tirumala

TIRUPATI: Hotel Tirumala Residency is conducting an exclusive Chinese food festival at its newly-renovated restaurant, "Blue." Thirty new dishes are being introduced at the mela, which will be held till August 14. The charges are Rs.125 per adult and Rs.70 for a child.

According to a release by R.Madhu, the executive director, the hotel holds a lucky draw for guests everyday during the festival, as part of a tie-up entered into with Club Mahindra Holidays. The lucky winners are eligible for a tour package worth Rs.15,000 to Goa, Mussourie, Ooty, Kodaikanal and Mysore.

Five killed in accident

Kakinada: Five persons were killed on the spot and 15 others were injured when the tractor in which they were returning to Janupalli village after attending a marriage at P. Gannavaram went out of control and overturned near Gangalakurru of Ambajipet Mandal on Saturday.

The victims were identified as Bokka Satyavati, 30, Penumala Satyanarayana, 40, Penumala Savithri, 60, Peyyala Mayadevi, 11, and Peyyala Sankar, 25. - Correspondent

Youth drowned in backwaters

KURNOOL: The flood situation turned grim along the banks of the Tungabhadra on Saturday as the flow rose to 1.60 lakh cusecs.

In Kurnool city, a youth, identified as Sha Nawaz Khan, 22, was drowned in the backwaters collected in the Hundri.

He got into the river for swimming but could not return to the bank because of sudden surge of water. Meanwhile, the Srisailam discharged 7,64,06 cusecs, including 6 lakh cusecs through spillway. The flood situation at the Tungabhadra dam at Hospet eased as the discharges came down to 63,000. - Staff Reporter

Elected to photography academy

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh State Academy of Photography has unanimously elected Phani Kumar, IAS, its president for a term of three years. He is presently working as Additional Chief Electoral Officer and has earlier held the posts of Director, eSeva, and Additional Director- General of EPTRI.

Mr. Phani kumar has awards in various national and international photography exhibitions and has also delivered talks on the subject as guest faculty. He succeeds C.S Sastry. Other office-bearers elected are R. Sunitha, vice-president, Rajan Babu, secretary, and M. Viswender Reddy, treasurer, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Open varsity MBA examination

HYDERABAD: MBA final year examinations of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University will be held from October 21 to 26. The second year exams will be held from November 11 to 16 and the first year exams from November 24 to 29. The last date for submission of exam registration form at the study centres is September 15, according to a university press release.

The university has declared the results of MBA second year supplementary exams. The memoranda of marks will be sent to the residential address of students shortly. - Special Correspondent

New Democracy member arrested

KHAMMAM: CPI (ML New Democracy) dalam commander and District Committee member Madhu alias Avunuri Narayanaswamy was arrested by a police party in Muttarapugutta village, 25 km from Yellandu on Saturday.

New Democracy sources said the arrest was made when Madhu was addressing a political class in the forest village. They said that some 300 villagers squatted on the road preventing the police from taking away the party activist. It resulted in mild tension in the village. - Staff Reporter

Woman naxalite surrenders

Kakinada: Deputy commander of Srikakulam district Special Guerrilla Squad of the Maoists Zartha Lakshmi alias Kamala alias Lalitha surrendered before the East Godavari Superintendent of Police Vemuganti Naveen Chand at his camp office in Rampachodavaram on Saturday. She hails from Dadilikavada village of Y. Ramavaram mandal.

Close call for boat passengers

VIZIANAGARAM: Some 70 persons of Kottu and Khemsila, a majority of them students below 15 years, had a miraculous escape on Friday when the country boat in which they were crossing the Nagavali overturned a few metres away from the riverbed at Komarada, the mandal headquarters village.

As the water flow was not much, people taking bath in the river rescued them. - Correspondent
