  • Good response to padayatra in GK Veedhi claimed
  • Tribals being educated on how mining would ruin lifestyle
  • Several girijans attended meetings addressed by APGS activists

VISAKHAPATNAM: After a brief gap, the Andhra Pradesh Girijan Sangham (APGS) will launch its second phase of padayatra in Araku Valley and Anantagiri mandals in the district to protest against bauxite mining.

Strongly opposing the agreement signed by the State Government with Jindal Group for setting up an alumina plant at a cost of Rs. 9,000 crores, the APGS leaders said they had successfully completed 300 km.-long padayatra in G.K. Veedhi mandal during July 21 to August 4.

``We will spread the message against bauxite mining in Araku Valley and Anantagiri mandals by holding grama sabhas.

During our tour, we will also motivate our brethren to form grama suraksha samithis to continue our peaceful struggle against mining,'' the APGS district president, Killo Surendra, told reporters here on Sunday. Mr. Surendra and other APGS activists, Korra Balaram, Banangi Chinnaiah Padal, Vamprangi Bujjibabu and Gurumurthi Suribabu, said the padayatra in GK Veedhi mandal evoked an encouraging response. Braving intermittent rain, several girijans attended the meetings addressed by them.

The CITU State president, Ch. Narsinga Rao, and other leaders also took part in the first phase of padayatra.
