Spellbound by Srisailam

Staff Reporter

Many turned out to enjoy the Krishna at her thunderous best

FURY UNLEASHED: Tourists trooped in to see this not-so-common sight at Srisailam.

KURNOOL: It was an overnight change. The Srisailam dam across the Krishna just turned into a tourist spot. Tourists flock to this engineering marvel, listening spellbound to the roar when water columns fall to a depth of 400 ft and getting sprayed by the water drops. Families pack their lunches, pick the best spots under trees and drink in the grand sight.

The locals have a comparison to offer. They find this ferocious outlet akin to `Sivathandavam'. But, the waterfall is more "beautiful" when a moderate flood is let out. It apparently resembles an elegant young dancer!

Photographers with Polaroid cameras did brisk business. Many wanted their snaps taken with the dam in full fury in the backdrop. The security staff had a tough time controlling those who wanted to walk on the dam.

The ten crest gates of the dam were heightened to 36 feet to discharge over six lakh cusecs.

1998 scenario

The Superintending Engineer of the Srisailam dam, E.P. Yadagari, said the dam was handling the biggest flood now after 1998 when 8.40 lakh cusecs was released. The flow then flooded the power stations causing extensive damage to the units. This time, the AP Genco officials were asked to take precautions.

The 1998 case might not be repeated now as the power station has built a strong wall and water level in the downstream Nagarjunasagar has been kept at comfortable level.
