Independence Day horticulture show begins today in Bangalore

Display of bonsai plants is an added attraction this year

BANGALORE: The Department of Horticulture and Mysore Horticulture Society will organise Independence Day horticulture show from August 8 to 15.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, the Director of Horticulture, Vasanth Kumar, said the society will organise a drawing competition for schoolchildren and an essay competition for college students on the topic "Health of human being the importance of medicinal plants required."

This year's show will have potted plants, cut flowers, ikebana, floral art, bonsai, vegetable carvings, Dutch flower art, junior arrangement, dry flower arrangement and the newly introduced Thai art arrangements, he said. He said the flower show has been playing a key role in disseminating hi-tech knowledge of horticulture. In the light of the changed of scenario of horticulture, flower shows have been converted into horticulture shows, which not only focus on information but also throw light on the emerging technologies in horticulture.

The display of bonsai plants will be an added attraction. Water plants grown in specially made ponds, and medicinal and aromatic plants will also be on display. Temperate flowers such as gloxinia, tuberous rooted begonia, altromaria and liluims will be showcased. Rose will be arranged in circular, pyramid and spherical patterns. The expo will also have exotic flowers such as alphineas moosa, hehiconias, ginger bop, liliums and folliages.

The Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, will inaugurate the show. R. Srinivas, Minister for Horticulture, and Ramalinga Reddy, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, will participate in the function.
