KARGIL: There appears to be a resurgence of ethnic identities across Kargil in the Ladakh belt. People here have begun to demand recognition of their distinct identity and, cultural and linguistic aspirations within Jammu and Kashmir. The recent visit of political guests from across the Line of Control here only accentuated the fact that the trend was no different across the Line of Control in the Northern areas where the political situation remained far from normal.
Rousing reception
For the first time a two-member political delegation from the Northern Areas visited Kargil. They received a rousing welcome from the local people who shared with them ethnic, linguistic and cultural similarities. Cultural programmes were organized for the delegation, which included Shinna and Balti dances and songs. Haji Fida Mohammad Nashad, one of the guests from Skardu, got emotional during the Shinna dance. He said, "For me this is my home as people living here are just the same in every respect in terms of language, culture or tradition. There are problems to which the authorities on both sides of the Line of Control have to find solutions. At least, they should make sure that the people living here and across the Line of Control who belong to the same larger family should be allowed to meet each other without restrictions."
