Three washed away in Krishna floodwaters

People living in low-lying villages along the riverbank being evacuated; officials on alert in upstream mandals

GUNTUR: The number of persons getting washed away in the floodwaters of the Krishna has gone up to three on Sunday in Guntur district, with the discharge from Nagarjunasagar Project increasing to 4.85 lakh cuses at 8 p.m.

While one student got washed away at Tadepalli on Saturday, two persons trying to remove their electric motor at Kamepalli in Bellamkonda mandal got washed away on Sunday morning. The victims were identified as Inumula Rama Rao, 24, and Bikonda Venkateswarlu, 20.

The district Collector G. Jayalakshmi visited Bodanam village in Bellamkonda mandal to supervise the evacuation work. Some 600 people have been evacuated from low-lying villages downstream Prakasam Barrage, while all Mandal Revenue Officers have been kept on alert in the upstream mandals. Boats and nets of several fishermen had got washed away.

The outflow from Nagarjuna Sagar is likely to go up to 6 lakh cusecs and already fields in many villages in the district had got inundated. The maximum release from Nagarjuna Sagar even during the 1998 floods was 3 lakh cusecs. Four rescue boats were stationed all along the west bank to immediately react in case of necessity. The worst affected areas were Bodanam, Pulichinta, and Gollapeta in Bellamkonda, Madipadu, Paduvai, Konuru and Temarru in Atchempeta mandal, Regulagedda, Bellampalli and Gorlepalem in Machavaram mandal. In Machavaram mandal, standing crops were inundated in a large extent. Water entered Ramapuram, Tangeda and Vemavaram in Dachepalli mandal also. The District Collector has arranged a boat at Bodanam village and in case water level rises, they would be evacuated with the help of a bus stationed at Emmajigudem.
