Power cut

CHENNAI: Power supply will be suspended in parts of S.K.Nagar, Park Town, Ambattur, Esplanade, Sowcarpet, Pudupet, Muthialpet, Mandaveli, Ramapuram and Periamet between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Eye check-up

About 130 senior citizens were screened at an eye camp organised by The Centre for the Welfare of the Aged and Pammal Sankara Eye Hospital at Parivakkam village near Poonamallee on Saturday. Fortyone of the patients have been referred for cataract surgeries.

Narayana Seva camp

About 210 persons were treated at the 261st Narayana Seva camp organised by Hindu Mission Hospital, Tambaram, at Vembedu near Mambakkam on Sunday. A team of seven doctors treated the patients of which 12 were referred for cataract surgeries.

Lecture on graphics

Students of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College, Vepery, learnt about the fundamentals of graphics and effective use of multimedia in areas such as fashion designing. They chief executive officer of CYS Systems, C.Y.Sathyanarayana's lectured them on graphics and animation organised by the department of computer applications and IT.

`Kala Sagar-2005'

Durgadevi Choudary Vivekananda Vidyalaya, Jawahar Nagar, conducted a two-day cultural programme, `Kala Sagar-2005' at their premises on Friday.

About 1,000 students participated from various schools in the several contests, including dance, elocution and painting.

Auto fare hike demanded

Members of Indian Organisation for Developmental Action demanded that the State Government must implement the Madras High Court order to raise auto fare.

Though the organisation had presented several representations to the government, the government was yet to take action, said an official release.

Star tortoises seized, one held

The Anna Salai Police recovered 575 star tortoises from a lodge on Saturday.

One person was arrested in this connection.

According to police, following a tip off that star tortoises were kept in a lodging house on Ellis Road, a raid was conducted on Saturday night, which resulted in the seizure of the reptiles.

The arrested person was identified as Iqbal Hussain of Ilayangudi, Sivaganga district. He told police that he got the reptiles from Visakhapatnam. He has been remanded to judicial custody.

The reptiles were handed over to the wildlife authorities, police said.

Bomb threat turns out to be hoax

A bomb threat call in the city has turned out to be a hoax on Sunday. Police said an unidentified person called the newspaper, which has its office on Anna Salai, and said that bombs would explode in three cinema halls — on Anna Salai, in T. Nagar and in Purasawalkam.
