Staff Correspondent

10-day programme launched to create awareness on the song

FOLLOWING TRADITION: Freedom fighter M.S. Kalburgi inaugurating `Vande Matharam Abhiyan' organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in Hubli on Monday.

HUBLI: M.S. Kalburgi, freedom fighter, said on Monday said that fascination for western culture has made the youth less patriotic.

Presiding over a function to inaugurate "Vande Matharam Abhiyan," a 10-day programme organised by the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Mahila Vidyapeeth here, Mr. Kalburgi said the concept of "swadeshi" has been discarded by most of the youth.

Mr. Kalburgi spoke about the role of "Vande Matharam" during the freedom struggle. Vande Matharam is not just a song, it gave additional strength to freedom fighters.

Vande Matharam is more relevant now, he added.

Shantanna Kadivala, vice-president of the Vande Matharam Abhiyan Swagath Samiti, who inaugurated the "abhiyan", concurred with Mr. Kalburgi. It is regretting to note that one has to make efforts to instil patriotism in the youth, he said.

Sarojini Chavalar, Principal of the Mahila Vidyapeeth Degree College, spoke about the origin of Vande Matharam and the importance of the song.

Shivanand Dhaduti, President of the city unit of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad, and Vikas Hubballi, Secretary, were present.

Manjula Mundaragi, Vice-President, welcomed the gathering. Mahendra Kautal, convener of the samiti, proposed a vote of thanks. As part of the "abhiyan," several programmes and competitions to create awareness on the song will be held in schools and colleges in Hubli and Dharwad.
