A solution to waste disposal

Tackling solid waste has been high on the agenda of many civic bodies of the State.

Despite the Supreme Court directive on setting up solid waste treatment plants, barring a few, not many local-self Governments have succeeded in addressing the issue. Burgeoning heaps of municipal waste and the absence of an effective mechanism to treat the waste have been worrying civic administrators. The issue had also invited the wrath of the Ombudsman — both the present and the past.

KARMA, a Thrikakkara-based NGO, made a significant step towards handling kitchen and toilet waste by setting up a eco-friendly waste elimination project at the courtyard of the Kochi Corporation office. The unit can process five kg waste and five litres of water and produce biogas that would burn for two to three hours continuously. Any perishable material can be processed in the unit.

Though the unit costs Rs. 12,500, the cost can be reduced considerably if Ferro-cement tanks are used in the unit, says P.K. Manoharan, secretary of KARMA.

KARMA says N.P. Dominic, president of the organisation.
