Met. Department predicts revival of monsoon Shortfall in area under oilseeds, coarse cereals
NEW DELHI: With rainfall having improved in parts of the country, kharif sowing has picked up and is almost on a par with last year's level for all major crops except oilseeds and coarse cereals. Rain, however, continues to be deficient in Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of the northeast. An inter-ministerial meeting in the Agriculture Ministry on Monday noted that five meteorological sub-divisions representing 21 per cent districts in Bihar, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura were rain deficient. However, the India Meteorological Department has predicted revival of the monsoon over east and central India between August 10 and 12 and that it may extend further into central and adjoining north peninsular India. The total area under rice so far is 223.13 lakh hectares compared to 227.33 lakh hectares last year. The area under pulses is 81.12 lakh hectares (82.26 lakh hectares). Cotton coverage is 79.11 lakh hectares (77.93 lakh hectares). Of this, Bt cotton accounts for 6.59 lakh hectares. Under coarse cereals, it is 222.91 lakh hectares (216.05 lakh hectares). The shortfall is on account of the lower coverage under bajra and maize. The area under sugarcane is 41.34 lakh hectares (37.52 lakh hectares) and jute 7.88 lakh hectares (7.69 lakh hectares). The fall in coverage under oilseeds at 150.37 lakh hectares (154.28 lakh hectares) is due to lower cultivation of groundnut in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. Sowing, however, is still on in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Soybean coverage fell short due to lower sowing in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. Sunflower cultivation has been lower in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Storage improves
The storage in 76 important reservoirs has improved. The total live storage on August 5 was 79.61 billion cubic metres against 37.08 billion cubic metres during the corresponding period last year.
