Sand seized from banks of River Karamana

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau confiscated a large quantity of sand, seven country-boats and sand-mining equipment from the banks of River Karamana in a pre-dawn raid on Tuesday. Two boats, three lorries and five lorry-loads of sand were seized from the banks at Thrikkannapuram, while five boats and 90 lorry-loads were seized from Charuvalakkadavu, Dy. Superintendent of Police K. Sreekumaran Nair said. The raid was carried out under the direction of ADGP Sibi Mathew. — Special Correspondent

Committee to hold sitting

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Standing Committee on Minority Education will hold a sitting at the Government Guest House at Thycaud in Thiruvananthapuram on August 10. The members of the committee headed by Zafar Ali Naqvi, former Minister of Uttar Pradesh, will also hold talks with individuals and organisations concerned and evaluate the performance of educational institutions run by minority communities. — Staff Reporter

Chandy inaugurates fund raising campaign

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: C hief Mminister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the fund raising campaign for the National Institute for Speech and Hearing (NISH) on Tuesday by making the first donation. According to a press note issued here, the fund being instituted to enable the NISH to build a fully equipped campus at Akkulam where it has been given 10 acres of land by the Government. The first stage of the construction that is expected to cost Rs.5 crores is under way. The pre-school students of NISH, their parents, other students of different courses and the honorary director of the Institute G. Vijayaraghavan participated in the inaugural ceremony. Trees posing threat to be cut down

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government has issued an order permitting the cutting down of trees on school campuses that tend to pose a threat to life or property. The prior permission of the Departments of Forests or Public Works is not mandatory for the purpose and the Parent Teacher Associations can initiate action to this effect, as per the order issued here on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter

Lab to function round the clock

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Advanced Clinical and Research Laboratory, set up by in the Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, by the Kerala Health Research and Welfare Society, will function round the clock. Even those without OP tickets or other documents can make use of the services available at the modernised laboratory. The laboratory also has facilities for research and project works. — Staff Reporter
