KOZHIKODE: Public support is vital for the police to check thefts. Community policing was a highly successful exercise in the contemporary social set up, said M.N. Krishna Murthy, Inspector General of Police (North Zone). He was speaking at a face-to-face programme on `increasing thefts and traffic problems in Kozhikode city,' organised by the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) here on Tuesday. "Help us nab the culprits. Form residents associations and create awareness on how to prevent thefts. Police and people must work together," said Mr. Krishna Murthy. He said burglary attempts and thefts were on the rise across the State. He, however, said that traffic regulation was not the "baby of the police" but only one of its many duties. "Traffic engineering is a vital component to ensure orderliness. Public awareness of traffic rules is vital too, " he said. City Police Commissioner H. Venkitesh stressed the need for public cooperation to enable the police to maintain law and order in the city. He added that public support would help counter traffic problems. The police employ scientific methods such as fingerprint identification to nab the culprits, Mr. Venkitesh said. Police personnel were often deployed in strength to tackle student agitations and law and order problems created during the Marad trial. There was a tenfold increase in vehicular traffic and lack of road capacity leading to chaos. Former CCCI president M. Muzamil in a memorandum highlighted the problems faced by the city residents with regard to law and order and traffic.
