NYC(I) holds Quit India Day rally in Kollam

Staff Reporter

Sole aim is to oust Chandy Government: Karunakaran

SHOW OF STRENGTH: A view of the Quit India Day rally organised by the National Youth Congress (Indira) in Kollam on Tuesday.

KOLLAM: A Quit India Day rally organised by the National Youth Congress (Indira) here on Tuesday turned out to be an impressive show of strength by the National Congress (Indira).

The rally, led by NYC(I) president Ibrahimkutty Kallar, was flagged off by NC(I) president K. Muraleedharan shortly after 4.30 p.m. from Asramam Maidan.

NYC(I) cadres from northern districts began arriving at the Maidan by 5 a.m. Vehicles carrying NYC(I) activists from various parts of the State were flowing into Kollam city since 9 a.m.

Cadres from various parts of Kollam and the neighbouring districts were brought in vehicles at regular intervals. By 3 p.m. all roads leading to the Maidan were choked with all types of vehicles.

A vast majority of those who participated in the rally were youth. As the rally progressed, slogans in support of the NC(I) leaders K. Karunakaran and K. Muraleedharan were raised. The demonstrators also raised slogans condemning the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. No slogans were raised against the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or the Left Democratic Front.

Inaugurating a public meeting organised in connection with the rally, Mr. Karunakaran said the sole aim of his party was to ensure that the Government led by Mr. Chandy was ousted. Under Mr. Chandy's rule, the State has plunged into anarchy.

Addressing the meeting, Mr. Muraleedharan said the UDF Government had antagonised all sections of society except `mafias.' The Government has even cheated tsunami victims by misusing the funds collected for their rehabilitation. UDF leaders are manipulating things to avoid elections. There is even a conspiracy to postpone local body elections.
