KANNUR: A reform movement within the media should emerge to check the erosion of quality in journalism in this age of corporatisation of the media, according to speakers at a seminar here on Tuesday. The seminar, on `Journalism in the era of globalisation' organised by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists, also underlined the importance of reviving the image of the media as an institution that creates informed citizens. Speaking at the seminar, N.P. Rajendran, journalist, said the media once equipped the people to take informed decisions. Editorial policy of newspapers used to be totally independent, he said adding that this principle was today fast changing in this age of globalisation. The world had become a market with the uncontrolled flow of finance capital. The reader of a newspaper was today being treated as a consumer and a sales vehicle. Mr. Rajendran said the quality of democracy had recorded an erosion with the entry of globalisation. Decisions were not being taken by democratic bodies of a country. A corporate body controlled by a few individuals influenced the decisions. Media was also being corporatised thanks to globalisation, he added. P. Balan presided over the function. A.V. Anil Kumar and Kasim Irikkur also spoke.
