Arun puts Coimbatore in second stage

Coimbatore: Leg-spinner Arun Prasad's six-wicket haul enabled host Coimbatore register a comfortable eight-wicket win over Erode in the first stage of the TNCA Hercules MTB Turbo Drive inter-district under-19 cricket tournament here on Wednesday.

In another match, Thiruvallur scored its third straight win, a 187-run verdict over Villupuram.

At Coimbatore: Erode 156 (Arun Prasad six for 42) lost to Coimbatore 158 for two in 36 overs (Deepak 68 not out); Thiruvallur 292 for six in 50 overs (B. Sriram 80, Prasanth 81, Kamalanathan three for 47) bt Villupuram 105 in 20.5 overs (Santhosh 32, T. Shri Balan five for 40, Madan Kumar four for 55). Thiruvallur and Coimbatore, with three and two wins respectively, made it to the second stage.

At Theni: Theni 183 for eight in 50 overs (S.P. Saravanakumar 55 not out, Dinesh Lakshmanan 40) lost to Madurai 187 for eight in 49.2 overs (Sivaraman 61, Samathuvan 53); Kanyakumari 126 in 46 overs lost to Kancheepuram 127 for four in 36 overs (Vignesh 44 not out). Kancheepuram (three wins) and Madurai (two) qualified.

At Dindigul: Dindigul 148 in 40.1 overs (A. Rajesh 49) lost to Karur 151 for nine in 46.5 overs (G. Sukumar 50, R. Karthick 54, B. Gopi four for 25); Cuddalore 204 in 37.3 overs (R. Maniraj 62, R. Pradeep Singh 52, M. Vinothkumar 42, Sourav Sahu four for 37) bt Nilgiris 125 in 28.5 overs. Dindigul and Karur, with two wins, progressed.

At Tirunelveli: Ramanathapuram 297 for eight in 50 overs (Manikandan 93, Baskar Sethupathi 80) bt Virudhunagar 172 in 31.5 overs; Tuticorin 206 in 49.3 overs bt Tirunelveli 175 in 46.3 overs (Martin 44). Tuticorin (three wins) and Tirunelveli (two) advanced.

At Pudukottai: Pudukottai 109 in 43.3 overs (Shanmuga Raja 44 not out) lost to Vellore 113 for eight in 13.3 overs (Shanmuga Raja five for 39); Tiruvarur 214 in 47.4 overs (Ashok 58) bt Perambalur 137 in 39.2 overs. Vellore (four wins) and Nagapattinam (three) entered second stage from the five-team league.

At Salem (Tuesday's matches): Thanjavur 249 for nine in 50 overs (Gowtham Jayaram 54, Imthiyas 52, Vijaya Baskar 46, Suresh three for 40, Seetharaman three for 36) bt Pondicherry 199 in 44.1 overs (Salim 61, Suresh 43, Siddharth three for 56); Salem 248 for four in 50 overs (Saravanan 126 not out, Kannan 66) bt Namakkal 175 in 43.3 overs (Shanmuga Sundaram 45).
