President meets freedom fighters

NEW DELHI: The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, hosted a large number of freedom fighters at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

"I am extremely happy to meet all of you," said Dr. Kalam. "Today our country is free because you have all given your best to the nation in your prime years."

The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and the Chairperson of the National Advisory Council, Sonia Gandhi, were present on the occasion.

Dharna staged

NEW DELHI: A large number of workers of the Modern Food Industries Employees' Union staged a dharna on Parliament Street here on Wednesday demanding that the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh table the report of the fact-finding committee on the anti-labour practices of the Hindustan Liver Limited and BALCO managements.

The secretary of the Delhi State Committee of the Communist Gadar Party of India, Jasvir Singh, appealed to the workers to unite and fight for justice and reversal of privatisation.

Power supply to be hit

NEW DELHI: Power supply will be affected in some parts of the Capital on Thursday due to planned maintenance work being done by BSES.

In Mundka (Rajendra Park, Veena Enclave and Gulshan Park) there will no electricity from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; in Chandni Chowk (Dariba, Hathi Khana, Pai Walan and Dharampura) power supply will be interrupted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and in Khanpur (IGNOU, Dakshinpuri and Tughlakabad Institutional Area) power will not be available from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

In Palam (Mahavir Enclave), Dwarka (Vishwas Park) and Vikaspuri (Uttam Nagar Block-I, J, K, L and O) there will be power disruption from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. while R.K. Puram (Sector-12) will have no electricity from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

L-G offers `chadar'

NEW DELHI: The Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi, B.L. Joshi, offered holy "chadar" for Ajmer Sharif on the occasion of the Urs of Khwaja Gharib Nawaz, Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti, at Raj Nivas here on Wednesday. Mr. Joshi said, "Hazrat Moinuddin Chishti's message to humanity was peaceful co-existence and communal harmony."

Training programme

NEW DELHI: A three-day training programme organised by the Haj Committee for the trainers of North India ended at Asaf Ali Road here on Wednesday. The Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed, who chaired the valedictory function, stressed the need for more such training programmes. The Chairman of the Haj Committee of India, Tanvir Ahmed, and the Vice-Chairman, Bakar Kazmi, were among those present.
